Synopsis: After a fun playful day in the zoo, Joan and her 4-yr old son Lincoln are almost at the exit gate before closing time, when she sees something that sends her sprinting back into the zoo with her child in her arms! For the next 3 hours, she keeps on running and hiding, trying to stay one step ahead of danger. When and where should they hide, what or who should they look out for? Fierce Kingdom asks where the boundary is between our animal instinct to survive and our human duty to protect one another. For whom should a mother risk her life? Is running-for-life the better option?

Pros: Very gripping and intense premise! Life-threatening incident in the ZOO of all the places!! The book reveals what happens within those terrifying 3 hours! How Joan’s mind goes on an over-alert mode, how any human being might react under similar circumstances and how as a mother her survival instinct is split between the need to protect her own son versus protecting other helpless strangers. An easy, quick, nail-biting, breath-stopping read that you simply need to read till the end to see how things turn out. The book is mostly about Joan and her son Lincoln but there are other characters that make an entry much later into the book. Loved the character of Kailynn – the 16yr old teenager the most! Very unexpected personality!

Cons: For such a perfectly horrific premise, the thrill-factor came only in sporadic moments. Or rather, the book was mostly descriptive which got little monotonous in the middle. There was sooo much more that could have happened. It was inside a zoo for god’s sake! I was expecting the wild, ferocious animals to come into the scene but that never happened! Something about the reactions of the mother quite irked me too – maybe because I probably would have reacted differently.

Thrill and narrative fell short for me. But I’m sure a movie on this one would be totally awesome!

I received this book from Penguin UK Books, in exchange for an honest review.
