Penguin Books ARC: Bonfire by Krysten Ritter

#NadirasPointOfReview: Bonfire by Krysten Ritter.

Synopsis: Should one ever go back home? Abby Williams returns back to her home town after 10 years, but this time as an environmental lawyer. Her new case is to investigate Optimal Plastics – the town’s high profile company. Is this company connected in any way to the disappearance of her best friend Kaycee 10 years back? In the process, she discovers a disturbing ritual called The Game that will threaten the reputation and lives of many.

Genre: Suspense/Mystery.

Published on: 9th November 2017.

Pros: Beautiful cover. Interesting plot. Quick chapters. Easy writing. Important topics of bullying and mean girls and how problems start small but spiral into bigger problems if not contained and if a conscious effort is not taken to speak up.

Cons: Slow-burning suspense. Not thrilling enough, just mystery. You wait for the big reveal but you already know it will be nothing extraordinary. Last few pages did pack a punch in terms of thrill, but overall I just couldn’t wait to finish reading the book. Abby sounded more like a detective than a lawyer and it would actually have served the story better if she really was!  What’s the book got to do with Bonfire? Just because there’s a mere mention of bonfire in the book doesn’t mean it has got anything to do with it. Ugh, I’m annoyed with misleading book titles. Reading two books in a row about environmental issues – I notice that somehow this important topic is being sidelined, that it verges on the meh.

Bottomline: Good as a debut novel but overyhyped, as its written by a celebrity.

My Rating: 2 ⭐⭐ or just maybe a ⭐⭐⭐

Thank you @penguinukbooks for sending me this ARC.
