Book Review: Perfect Days by Raphael Montes

What you feel is infatuation. It’s an illness, an obsession. It’s anything but love.

On the last page of this book, there was the Author’s Acknowledgement in which he said: “…….Finally, I would like to thank my mother. She was quite shocked after reading Suicides and asked, “Why do you write about such violent things? Try to write a love story.” Perfect Days is the result of her request.”

Hahahahaa!! LOLOLOLOL! Okay no comments. Let’s read on and start from the beginning!

#NadirasPointOfReview: Perfect Days by Raphael Montes.

Synopsis: Teo is a twisted young medical student. He lives with his paraplegic mother and her dog. His best friend is Gertrude – a corpse. He meets Clarice, an aspiring screenwriter and who is his exact opposite. He stalks her, follows her and finally kidnaps her and goes on a dark and delirious road trip across Brazil, stopping by on all those places Clarice has been writing about. This is a translated English-language debut of Brazil’s most celebrated young crime writer Raphael Montes.

Pros:

  • Relatively short book. Easy writing.
  • Keeps you guessing and maintains a steady pace throughout.
  • The unique dwarf hotel and island resort they go to is so visually vivid – would love to see it on screen!
  • The ending was unpredictable and you couldn’t have reached that conclusion to the book.
  • Entertaining but not your usual crime thriller.

Cons:

  • What the hell happened in this book!
  • Every single page I flipped, I kept thinking this is NOT happening.
  • It was so unrealistic. I still cant believe we were supposed to believe this story.
  • Nauseatic details. Reminded me of Lolita and coincidentally Lolita is referenced later in the book as well!!
  • Very rushed ending.
  • No thrill factor in this thriller. Just a story.

Bottom Line: Something is definitely amiss in this crime/psychological thriller. Just because there is a Psycho and a Murder put inside a story – doesn’t make it a Thriller. Referring to the author’s acknowledgement earlier – nope, this cant be a love story! Yikes! His poor mom! LOL!

My Rating: 3- stars ⭐⭐⭐.
